How to Keep Cannabis Fresh in the Dry Desert Air

With the expected growth of the marijuana industry, it’s now easier than ever to get your hands on some quality cannabis. However, chances are you want to know how to make your cannabis last longer.

The good news is not only can you keep cannabis fresh but you can also re-hydrate it if you have accidentally allowed it to dry out. Read on to find some important tips on keeping your marijuana at its finest quality.

How to Keep Cannabis Fresh

Hot desert climates can be difficult on marijuana. Fortunately, there are some simple tricks that you can apply to keep it fresher longer. Here are a few ways you can keep your marijuana in good shape.

Preventing Your Cannabis from Drying out in the First Place

One of the best ways that you can keep your weed fresh is by keeping it in the correct packaging to avoid it from drying out in the first place. For this step, you have a couple of options.

Airtight Containers and Cool Dark Areas

If you want to give your cannabis its best shot at staying fresh, you want to keep it away from harsh UV rays and oxygen as much as possible. While it may seem confusing (after all, sunlight and oxygen are used to grow the marijuana in the first place) trust us when we say this simple tip can add at least weeks on to the lifespan of your weed.

Try to keep your cannabis in a tight container that allows limited amounts of air to get in. Once you put your cannabis in an airtight container, you can keep it in a cool, dark location that won’t receive too much light.

Glass Jars Instead of Plastic

If you’re truly dedicated to keeping your weed fresh, it’s always recommended to use glass jars instead of plastic bags. You can pick-up one of our Re-Stash jars from our Mesquite dispensary. With the amount of money you’ll save on replacing dried out cannabis, you can consider it a valuable investment.

Speak with Your Budtender in Advance

If you’re buying your weed from a dispensary, you can always ask your bartender to point you in the direction of the freshest weed.

They typically will have some knowledge as to which strains have been sitting in the store longer, increasing the chances that they have dried out a bit.

What to Do If Your Cannabis Has Already Dried Out

If your weed has dried out, there’s no need to worry or head straight to the dispensary. There are ways to rehydrate your cannabis and enjoy it for even longer. Here you will find a couple of methods that you can follow to bring your weed back to life.

The Distilled Water Method

The first method for re-hydrating your cannabis involves distilled water. It is important that you are in fact using distilled water, as simple tapwater has typically been evaporated and tends to remove the excess impurities. You’ll find that distilled water is also used in cigar humidors to keep the wrappers of the cigars moist over time.

To start, relocate your cannabis to a plastic bag, small open jar, or even a medicine bottle.

Next, find a container that can be easily sealed with a lid and that’s large enough to hold the container of cannabis. Now, dampen a paper towel using the distilled water.

You want the paper towel to be about 70% damp. If it’s too wet, the excess moisture can actually result in mold.

Finally, place the open container of cannabis under the paper towel and close the container. You can let the cannabis sit for a period of 2 to 12 hours. The longer it sits, the more hydrated it will be.

The Fruit Peel Method

The next method you can use to hydrate your weed is known as the fruit peel method. Not only will the fruit peel method help hydrate your weed, but it can also add a light and citrusy undertone to your cannabis.

Using fresh peels, like the peel of a lemon or orange, is ideal because these peels tend to hold a good deal of their natural essential oils. Peels are also ideal for the hydrating your weed, as they are naturally moist and don’t need any extra moisture added.

For this method, you’re going to follow steps that are very similar to the distilled water method. Remember, this method is not a quick fix and could take anywhere from 1 to 3 days to fully re-hydrate the marijuana.

Simply add the peels of your orange or lemon into an airtight Ziploc bag along with the cannabis. Within a few days, you should have a citrusy rehydrated bag of weed that’s ready to enjoy.

Boveda Humidity Control Packets

Finally, if you’re really concerned with the quality of your weed, you can always purchase a product that’s designed specifically for keeping your weed fresh in any kind of weather.

Products like the Boveda humidity pack can both restore moisture to your weed as well as prevent it from drying out in the first place. While these products may cost a bit more than other methods on this list, it is a sure-fire way to keep your weed in good shape.
